The Role of White Papers in Medical Education
Translating Hilo’s client data into a clear, investor-ready visual piece with accompanying slide deck.
What We Did
This article explores the use of whitepapers within the medical devices industry as a tool for education, both for the public and medical professionals.
In this project, we analysed data that Hilo provided and used it to write a comprehensive whitepaper showcasing their findings relating to the UK public’s attitudes, awareness and understanding of hypertension.
Crucially, language used was both technical, to ensure brevity and credibility, and accessible.
The whitepaper was disseminated at a press conference – for which our graphic designer created an accompanying slide deck – that was attended by leading journalists and medical professionals in the UK.
To increase impact, we selected key data points for conversion into striking graphics, which was completed by our graphic designer.
Throughout, we worked closely with their Scientific Team, Regulatory Advisor and CEO to ensure that key messaging was aligned with their brand, ensuring integrity and, importantly, regulatory compliance.
And Why It Matters
High blood pressure is a preventable condition that is thought to cause more than half of all strokes and heart attacks in the UK, and is a known risk factor for heart disease, kidney disease, and vascular dementia. And it isn’t a condition that affects only others, it’s a global health challenge that impacts up to 33% of adults aged 30–79 (around 1.4 billion people worldwide), with estimates suggesting that half of sufferers are completely unaware they have it.
Hilo are a leading health brand that has developed anmd marketed a wrist-worn, lightweight, medical device that’s clinically validated, FDA-cleared and CE-marked (Class IIa). We believe in their mission, and wanted to help. During this project we worked closely with their scientific team to identify key trends within data they had collected, while ensuring that throughout the final output there was a thread; effectively ensuring a story. Key data points were selected for emphasis, both in text and through use of striking graphics.
To us, this was more than a project. This was directly developing messaging relating to an unseen and under-estimated public health emergency. We like to think that we’re doing our bit to raise awareness around blood pressure among the UK public and health professionals.
The ConsultaChem Difference
This project drew upon our knowledge and expertise as scientific leaders in our field, as well as the wider ConsultaChem network of expert editors.
From an editorial perspective, communicating the key takeaways from this research required finessing and streamlining of the story – ensuring that scientific accuracy and reliability was balanced with academic integrity; something that’s crucial in the medical field.
PhD-led oversight enabled rapid production of a working document that underwent rigorous checking by both ConsultaChem and the Hilo team – scientific and regulatory. In fact, we pulled out the big-guns, with an Associate Professor of Chemistry, a Director of Medicinal Chemistry and a practising GP all getting involved to ensure clarity and precision.
Imagery was prepared by the graphics team, and the close liaison between all parties ensured graphics were crisp, clear, meaningful and fitting with the Hilo brand.
